The original Owl Spit story
By Ovi Catanescu
People often ask great cooks and chefs the same question:
"This is delicious! What's the secret recipe?"
For years, I watched people smile as I was listed ingredient after ingredient—fresh herbs, spices, a special technique, maybe a family tradition passed down through generations.
Then, just as everyone thought the list was finished, the I would lean in with a completely serious face and say:
"...and of course, don't forget to add a little bit of owl spit."
For a brief moment, people didn't know what to think.
Then someone would laugh.
Soon the whole table would be laughing.
From that moment on, the meal became more than just food. It became a story people would tell their friends:
"Remember that restaurant where the chef said the secret ingredient was owl spit?"
That simple, unexpected phrase turned an ordinary dinner into a memory.
Years later, I realized that life is full of "owl spit."
Every family has it.
Every group of friends has it.
Every community has little stories, inside jokes, traditions, moments of kindness, funny accidents, and unexpected lessons that make people smile years later.
Those are the ingredients that cannot be found in any recipe book.
They are the invisible ingredients that give life its flavor.
That is why Owl Spit is not really about owl spit.
It is about discovering, preserving, and sharing those little moments that make us laugh, think, remember, and feel connected.
Because one day, the stories we leave behind may become the greatest gift we can give to our children and grandchildren.
So whenever someone tells a wonderful story, asks an unexpected question, or shares a memory that brings people together...
You might simply smile and ask:
"Where's the Owl Spit?"
